Shabdkosh.com - Then, and Now
This site started in November 2003 as a dictionary with not even a domain name! Then, it got its own domain
Here is how it looked at that time.
It was one of the leading Hindi language sites in the world to use latest web technologies and present Hindi text in Unicode format. Then, traffic started to grow and it went through a redesign. In late 2004, it got a new look and some new features.
The site saw continuous rise in the number of visitors, especially from India. We had to increase server capacity and along with that, refreshed the look and feel of the site once again. In 2006, we introduced an online virtual keyboard for Hindi typing. Again, this was among very few sites to have the virtual keyboard and Hindi typing facility built into the interface.
To enhance the database, we sought help from our users. This led to the development of contribute interface.
In 2009, there was a complete revamp which took a long time to develop. The site was moved to dedicated servers and redesigned for performance to support millions of searches every month.
This is what is online right now!

Serving users in over 100 cities in India
This site serves users from over a hundred cities in India. The way our user base is spread out shows the cosmopolitan nature of Hindi speakers. Several cities in the Southern part of India have a significant number of users.
It is also evident the large parts of central India and western India have hardly any Internet penetration. Most rural areas have near zero Internet penetration. Given that India has only 45 million Internet users, it is hardly surprising. It is less than 5% of the population!

First week of site transition
In the first week of transition to the new look of Shabdkosh, we got a lot of emails.
A large number of users from India, Australia, UAE, USA and other countries complained about the change in the Hindi input facility. User convenience is top priority for us and so, we have brought the features back! You would now see the two most popular keyboard interfaces
There were some minor issues in using the Contribute system on Internet Explorer 8. We have corrected that also.
Next, in some older browsers, the search form was not displaying correctly. That is also corrected. If you still see issues (for example, in IE6 which we are unable to test), please let us know.
As usual, if you like this site, please recommend it to others.

How to use the search on this site?
The search box is a powerful way to search dictionary entries. You only need to type in your query in Hindi or in English. There is no need to use any signs like ‘+’ or "AND" to create search strings. If there is a space in your query, then just give space.
When you perform a search, then the search system looks for an exact match. If it cannot find any match, it tried to seek other matches that may be closely related to your search.
During search, the search engine also looks for words that sound or are spelled similar to your query. On the result page, it shows some of the such words with their translations. You can click on any of these suggested words to see the meaning.
If you wish to know more, please let us know by writing to us.

How to get Hindi to work on computer?
The Hindi text on this site is generated in Unicode (UTF
-8). If you can read the following sentence, then your computer/operating system is unicode compliant and you should not have any problem using this site.
हिन्दी भारत की राष्ट्र भाषा है।
If you cannot view the Hindi sentence above, the following suggestions may be helpful.
Windows 2000/XP
If you have Windows 2000 or a more modern version of Windows, the support for Unicode is built in. If you can not see the Hindi sentence above, you should go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional Options. In the General tab, set all the languages you may want to display. Depending on which languages you set, you will be able to process multilingual data through all your applications, including your browser. This adds fonts as well as system support for these languages. The Arial Unicode MS font works well with this site. The picture below show the windows through which Input Locales and Language Settings can be configured in Windows 2000.

Having Internet Explorer will give you less problems with Windows operating systems. However, Mozilla also works fine with Unicode encoded multilingual web pages.

Windows 98 and older
If you have Windows 98 or an older version, it might be useful to visit the Unicode Consortium’s help pages on display problems. It seems that users with less technical background may find it easier to just upgrade their operating systems and web-browsers though it may not be the cheapest alternative.
Mac
In MAC OS X and later versions have Unicode support is built in and there should be no problems. For MAC OS 9.x, try using the Installation CD to install language packs.
UNIX
With the XFree86 version 4.0 and above, Unicode fonts should be already installed. On a typical system running RedHat 8.0 and above with the web browser version supplied with the OS, Unicode fonts should work without any problems. Please see Unicode Display problems page for details.

Can I print words and meanings?
Unfortunately, there is no support for nicely formatted printing at this time. You may copy/paste content to any Unicode friendly word processor (like MS Word, Notepad etc.) and then print the words/meanings you want. The English Hindi dictionary is continously being improved. You may find printing support available in future.
FAQs •
Can I get some search tips?
Here are some search tips:
- Type the search query and press ENTER key. You need not click on the Search Dictionary button to start search.
- You can use Unicode Hindi to search Hindi words. If the search fails, try to use fragments of the word. That might be useful if there is a spelling mismatch.
- If searching multiple words, try to search individual words. That is more reliable than searching a phrase.

How to enter Hindi meaning in contribute form?
You can enter hindi meaning by typing the hindi word in English if you are using the transliteration facility. This facility is provided so that you can enter Hindi text without requiring special software.
There are few things to note. Hindi text entry will work properly only on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista.
If you need more help, please send us email.
How to contribute?
We invite you to participate in improving this dictionary and in creation of the best English/Hindi dictionary in the world. Your contribution will add to the vocabulary of the dictionary and will benefit other users.
The contribute system provides a collaborative interface to improve the dictionary by sharing the knowledge of our users. Interested users can suggest translations. These suggestions are then opened to other users for voting and for corrections/improvements. When 10 votes are received by a submission, it is assumed to be correct and is added to the dictionary. When a submission is edited by other user, it is also opened for voting. Eventually, the correct translation will receive enough votes and that will become part of the dictionary. Over time, we believe that it will help in the growth of dictionary and ensure quality at the same time.
Here are some of the ways in which you can help this dictionary:
Vote on existing translations that other users have contributed
By voting on an existing translation, you can approve submissions from other users. When the number of votes is at least 10, the entry is considered verified. Users are only allowed to vote once per user and once per computer.
Correct or improve upon the existing entries contributed by other users
Any unverified entry that is already there can be modified to improve it. The modified/edited entry becomes another possible option that people can vote on. Generally, only one of the possible suggested translations will win in the voting process. The winning entry becomes a verified entry in the dictionary. The one that does not win is not open for voting anymore.
Add new entries for words/phrases that are not there in the dictionary at present
You can also start a new entry by entering the English/Hindi translation. When you add a new entry, it is open to other for voting and for editing. When your submission receives at least 10 votes, it becomes part of the dictionary.
Complete Hindi translation for requested entries
There are thousands of words that still need Hindi translation. These words have been searched for but we did not have any proper match on these searches. You can help in completing these entries. When you suggest a translation for any of these, it also is opened for voting by other users.
If you decide to help with this effort, we suggest that you register yourself. It takes less than five minutes and will make it possible for you to track the voting process for your contributions.
Finally, we must say that the collaborative system works properly only in an environment of trust. So, we request you to help us achieve that. Needless to say, we do monitor the internet addresses from where activity on the sites originates. At best, any attempt to cause harm to the system will result in blockage of that computer or user. We hope that we will not have to do any of that.
We welcome you to participate in building the collaborative dictionary!

About this site •
Background and Motivation
The online English Hindi dictionary started as a small project with an aim to just make a website in Hindi. Dictionary was chosen as an application because there was no good quality online dictionary at the time and also because making a dictionary involves lot of challenge. The first version was a very simple site with about 15,000 words from the public domain dictionary compiled by Ram Narain Lal in 1936. Over time, the vocabulary was improvised and today it has tens of thousands of words. This site has grown in popularity because of its easy interface and strong vocabulary database. And we stay committed to improving it continuously.
